The birth of the internet age created room for so many possibilities. It began with a read only system of the web one system. This was thrilling, but not self sustaining. How long would you not be able to give an opinion? Or let out the truth because you aren’t a publisher or web designer?
Luckily, that problem was solved with the introduction and widespread adoption of the web2 system. It enabled users to create, communicate, share and even collaborate with others, without needing to have any special skill in publishing or web design. It gave birth to the creator economy.
WHAT IS THE CREATOR ECONOMY?
The creator economy is a software-based facilitated economy that allows creators to earn revenue from their creations. Creations could be anything, ranging from text to short videos, lengthy videos to audio.
According to signalfire.com, The creator economy is defined as the class of businesses built by over 50 million independent content creators, curators, and community builders including social media influencers, bloggers, and videographers, plus the software and finance tools designed to help them with growth and monetization.
The leading companies in the creators economy include Tiktok, earning about $4.6 billion which was a 142% increase in year-on-year revenue, Instagram, earning about $47.6 billion dollars in revenue in 2021 amongst others.
However, statistics show that you can only earn 2 to 4 cents for every 1000 views on TikTok as a creator. According to Upwardli.com, you need an average of $63 thousand to live an average and comfortable life in America, which is about $64 thousand. If you need an average of a million views to make 40 bucks? Then it’s a clear indicator that it’ll be a struggle. This is why only 1% hit it big in the creator industry on TikTok.
On YouTube, you can earn between 3$ to 5$ per every 1000 views, and about 18$ per 1000 ad views ( I’m guessing you were wondering, why so many ads?) still, I will need an average of over 200 million views to rent a cabin in Maldives without stressing anyone or doing nothing else. That’s a whole lot to process!
With the revenue coming in to these companies and the revenues earned by a creator, do you think it’s fair? Hardly. This is the reason we’re so excited about the web3.0 move.
WHAT IS WEB 3.0?
According to etherum.org, Web3 has become a catch-all term for the vision of a new, better internet. At its core, Web3 uses blockchains, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs to give power back to the users in the form of ownership. A 2020 post on Twitter said it best: Web1 was read-only, Web2 is read-write, Web3 will be read-write-own. That already sounds amazing.

Now that we have gained clarity on the workings of the Web 2.0 system, it’s challenging to provide a rigid definition of what Web3 is. It has a few core principles that guide its creation.
- Decentralization: instead of the internet being controlled and owned by centralized entities, ownership gets distributed amongst its builders and users.
- Permissionless: everyone has equal access to participate in Web3, and no one gets excluded for any reason.
- Trustless: it operates using incentives and economic mechanisms instead of relying on trusted third parties.
- It is Crypto based: web3 does not rely on the basic and unreliable web 2 structures to finance or carry out operations.
