Every content creator would understand this. Creativity is quite hard. It is even harder when you have to maintain your quality for a lengthy period. A lot of people may like, or not like your content, or you just may be enjoying yourself. This is why Censorship is the last thing a content creator needs.
What is censorship?
According to the American Civil Liberties Union(ACLU) Censorship, the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are “offensive,” happens whenever some people succeed in imposing their personal political or moral values on others.
It seems the major reason for censorship was to protect other users, from issues such as bullying, and blackmail, among others. I am perfectly okay with censorship if this is its motive. However, at some point, it became more about the company’s image, than the people. Social media outlets began to ban people from not being associated with some “people “ who they find their content not to be appealing. This means basically, you’re not the center focus of these web 2 social media. They really don’t care about you. Here are a few reasons to prove that.
- Instagram’s latest update:
According to Sagaar Enjeti, an author and a co-host of Breaking points on YouTube, Instagram’s new update would mean shoving more videos into your feed, which is not tailored to your likes. This model is designed to compete with TikTok, which has increased in revenue by over $200 billion in 2022 and become the most downloaded app of the year, beating Instagram.
To show how they don’t even care about you, the user, the aim was to increase time spent on the app, as it is the only metric that marketers care about so that they could make huge profits from advertising. Does that sound fair to you?
- YouTube
YouTube used to be a cool place to learn amazing information until they discovered a milking machine; ads. Now YouTube has ads that are as numerous as the stars in the galaxy (lol). You can’t comfortably watch a video without ads being shoved in your face. Not like I’m into forex, but I’ll see some forex ads when I’m watching a baking video, or I’d see a car dealership ad when I’m trying to learn some math. How does this seem fair??
